Botox is an incredibly effective way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, lift areas on the face such as the jaw, tip of the nose and even fix issues such as migraines, teeth grinding and spasms.
What Actually is Botox?
Botox is the brand name for the injectable drug Onabotulinumtoxina, a substance which blocks the signal from the nerve to the targeted muscle to prevent it from contracting. By preventing the contracting of the muscles in the target area, there is less pull on the skin and a decrease in the appearance of wrinkles.
What’s the Procedure Like?
Prior to injecting the botox, a trained medical professional will conduct an assessment of the area you wish to have injected. This includes looking at the way features such as your mouth, nose and eyes move as you talk and smile to ensure you will still be able to move them naturally following the procedure.
Once this has been assessed, they will cleanse your face to remove any makeup and oils from the skin, reducing the risk of infection. The practitioner will also usually apply a topical anaesthetic cream around 20-30 minutes prior to the injection to numb the area and make it more comfortable.
When the area has been prepped and the anaesthetic has started to work, the practitioner will prepare a syringe containing the botox and connect it to a sharp needle which is then injected into the skin. The procedure can take up to fifteen minutes to carry out and the results can take between 2-3 days to start working. You will usually see the full effect within 2-3 weeks.
Does Getting Botox Hurt?
Many people worry that getting botox will be incredibly painful, especially as they are usually carried out on sensitive areas of the face such as near the eyes, lips, cheeks and nose. However, those who have had treatments often comment that it isn’t anywhere near as uncomfortable as they expected it to be.
This is because dermal fillers and botox are minimally invasive treatments using a tiny needle. The topical anesthetic applied by the practitioner also helps to numb the area and make it less painful.
Are There Any Side Effects and Will I Need Downtime?
When carried out correctly by a qualified practitioner, such as Dr Chris at Skin Consultants, the risks of Botox injections are very small, however, you may experience some side effects within 48-72 hours following the procedure.
Following treatment you may have:
- a headache and flu-like symptoms for the first 24 hours
- bruising, swelling and redness where the needles went in the skin
- a frozen look – you might not be able to move the muscles in your face if too much Botox is injected
- temporary weakness and droopiness in your face – for example, your eyelids or eyebrows may droop if the Botox moves into these areas
In very rare instances, serious problems such as blurred or double vision can happen if the area around the eyes is treated, or breathing difficulties if the neck area is injected.
Typically no downtime is needed following botox, however, you should avoid touching or using make up on the area for 6 hours after treatment. You may also experience some light swelling for 48-72 hours, though this shouldn’t affect your daily activities.
How Long Do the Results Last?
The results of botox can last anywhere between 3 to 6 months, though it can sometimes wear off more quickly or slowly than this. However, the more treatments you have, the longer the botox usually lasts in the future.
Why Choose Botox?
Once upon a time, the only hope for people wanting to change their appearance, reshape their features and reduce wrinkles was either make up, anti-aging creams or surgery. Unfortunately, anti-aging creams and make up can only do so much towards reducing the visible signs of aging and for many, cosmetic surgery is too expensive and involves too many risks.
Fortunately, with the advancements of the aesthetic industry, botox is available, providing a much safer and more effective non surgical alternative at an affordable cost. Botox injections are also significantly less painful than cosmetic surgery and provide results much faster with fewer side effects and no need for any downtime.
